The teachers at Boaz Middle
School expressed their concern about the
academic instruction provided through In School
Suspension. Many times these are students who
struggle with reading. They have a difficult
time in some or all of their content classes.
Sometimes these students are absent too often.
So many variables seem to work against them that
when they receive suspension outside the school
their academic problems are intensified. Many of
these students need explicit instruction and
monitoring closely understanding. Some are lost
when they return for they cannot make up lessons
missed. So often teachers send practice work to
alternative school because some cannot
understand the class work on their own.
The faculty at Boaz Middle School
discussed solutions to this problem that would
be in the best interests of the students. The
plan developed strives to solve the problem and
enhances the learning, achievement and success
of these students.
Following are the main components
of this afternoon school suspension program:
-
Program days
are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
-
Hours will be
from 3:00 -5:00 PM.
-
Instruction
will be provided in math and/or reading as
supplemental work or remediation according
to individual student need.
-
Certified
teachers monitor the On School Campus Alternative remediation and provide
instruction and guidance that will target
comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, writing
and math.
-
Students
will sign in and parents are required to
sign students out.
-
Parents must
provide transportation home.
-
Students who
commit serious offenses may still be
assigned to Alternative School.
The goal of this program is to
deter future problems for suspended students by
