Dear English 10 CP students,
The required 2017 summer reading for English 10 CP is Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals.
ABRIDGED VERSION — 18 chapters.
You may order the novel from the following websites:
You may also purchase this book at Barnes & Noble or Books a Million stores.
We will begin the study of this book in class on August 21, 2017.
On the date of August 21, 2017, the following assignment for Warriors Don’t Cry will be due:
- Annotate the novel for direct / indirect characterization and external / internal conflict.
- Create a dialectical journal in which you identify 12 significant “moments” in Melba’s search for freedom. Record when the “moments” occur (citing the page number), evidence to prove the “moment” (direct quotation), and a discussion of how/why this moment proved to be significant in Melba’s search (commentary). Keep in mind that this is NOT a plot summary, but rather a discussion/conversation with the text. Be certain to use your own thoughts, not the thoughts of others. Google searches for others’ thoughts will not strengthen your own mind and further your education. Your dialectical journal should be bound in a composition notebook solely devoted to Warriors Don’t Cry.
