Vertical Integration of Effective Teaching Practices that Engage Students in Discourse and Mathematical Thinking
Boaz City Schools is focused on preparing teachers and students with instructional strategies to participate in mathematical discourse that creates opportunities for deeper mathematical thinking that can apply to real-life settings. We believe in the application of the 8 Effective Teaching Practices (NCTM, 2014) that helps teachers engage students in the habits of mind highlighted in needed mathematical practices. In order to provide manageable ways to adapt to these effective teaching practices, Boaz City Schools has worked hard to vertically align mathematical routines and basic teaching moves that can be implemented in PreK through 12th grade and refined over time to aid all of our students in the area of numeracy. District and school leadership utilize a numarcy walkthrough tool that focuses on the following:
National Council Teachers of Mathematics (2014) 8 Effective Teaching Practices:
1. Establish mathematical goals that focus learning
2. Implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving
3. Use and connect mathematical representations
4. Facilitate meaningful mathematical discourse
5. Pose purposeful questions
6. Build procedural fluency from conceptual understanding
7. Support productive struggle in learning mathematics
8. Elicit and use evidence of student thinking
Standards for Mathematical Practice (2010)
Mathematically proficient students:
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
4. Model with mathematics
5. Choose appropriate tools strategically
6. Attend to precision
7. Look for and make use of structure
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
